The best type of refrigerator depends on your space and preferences: French-door refrigerators are popular for their modern, upscale appearance. Side-by-side models work well in smaller kitchens because their narrow doors require less space to open. Top-freezer models are typically the most reliable and affordable, though they need more clearance to open the doors fully.

While often used interchangeably, “fridge” usually refers to a basic, compact cooling appliance. “Refrigerator” is a broader term for larger units that may offer extra features such as freezers, precise temperature controls, and smart technology.

Refrigerators are designed to keep food fresh at temperatures above freezing, making them ideal for everyday use. Freezers maintain much colder, below-freezing temperatures for long-term food preservation. Many households benefit from having both—a refrigerator for daily items and a standalone freezer for bulk storage.

For food safety, set your refrigerator at 40°F (4°C) or below. Your freezer should be kept at 0°F (-18°C).

Most refrigerators last around 12 years, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. If your unit is older or not energy efficient, it may be time to consider a replacement before it stops working completely.
