Every wine connoisseur understands that the most important factor in preserving the quality of a bottle of wine is to store it properly and keep it cool. After all, how you store wine determines how it ages, and keeping it cool determines how it tastes once it’s been opened.
If you want to get the most out of every bottle, properly storing and cooling your wine is essential – with one of WhisperKOOL’s diverse selection of cooling units.
Many people are unaware of how much WhisperKOOL has to offer when it comes to cooling devices. To begin, this blog will focus on highlighting one of our most powerful units: The WhisperKOOL Phantom series.
The WhisperKOOL Phantom Series
Innovative. Intelligent. Invisible.
The Phantom series is a fully ducted self-contained system with a huge capacity. To better understand how this unit operates, we'll define these terms.
Self-contained means the evaporator and condensing units share a single housing. In contrast to split systems where the condensing and evaporator units are separated. Many self-contained WhisperKOOL wine cooling units are installed through a wall, where cool air flows into the wine cellar through the evaporator and exhausts hot air out into an adjacent room through the condenser.
The Phantom series is fully ducted, which means it does not require installation inside the cellar. They can be mounted anywhere as long as it’s within 25 duct feet of the cellar. The evaporator can be ducted into the cellar, whereas the condenser is usually ducted outside or in a utility room adjacent.
Wine collectors who do not want to see a cooling unit in their cellar or who wish to lessen or eliminate noise can use a fully ducted configuration. A fully ducted configuration has another advantage: low noise levels in the wine cellar.
Fully ducted self-contained units can be installed in a variety of ways and provide powerful cooling, which is especially beneficial in larger cellars.
The Phantom Series offers 3 models, depending on the size of your wine cellar:
Whisperkool Phantom 3500: 800 cu ft
Whisperkool Phantom 5000: 1250 cu ft
Whisperkool Phantom 8000: 2000cu ft
Features of WhisperKOOL Phantom Series
TOUCH DISPLAY
The Phantom series from WhisperKOOL puts the power of the controls right at your fingertips. It includes a high-tech controller called the KDT plus controller. It features a sleek modern appearance and an intuitive user interface, making it easier to optimize the temperature in your wine cellar. It can be mounted outside your cellar, allowing you to monitor the temperature and adjust the cooling unit without leaving the room.
The KDT digital touch display can be installed up to 50 feet away from the unit and comes with Advanced System Protection, which alerts you when certain parameters are not met.
BOTTLE PROBE
The liquid temperature measuring bottle probe ensures an accurate measurement of the temperature of the wines in the cellar. This is a more direct and accurate approach for measuring temperature in the cellar. By monitoring liquid temperature instead of air temperature, the bottle probe ensures that your wine cellar is set up for optimal wine aging.
How does it work?
The bottle probe continuously monitors a small bottle of wine to properly regulate the room temperature to reach the ideal 55 degrees Fahrenheit. The cooling unit adjusts its temperature automatically depending on bottle probe readings to keep your wine at the optimal temperature for preservation and maturing.
CORROSION-RESISTANT DRIP TRAY
The drip trays included on WhisperKOOL units are made of corrosion-resistant stainless steel. Pan tabs are also provided on certain units to prevent microbial growth and mold from building up.
COMPONENTS PANEL
The bottle probe port and fan switch are accessible from the top of the unit. The unit is powered by a standard electrical outlet.
FLEXIBLE INSTALLATION
The Phantom series has flexible installation options, allowing you to place the unit in whatever ducting configuration that best meets your needs, even if you have a limited amount of space. The strong blowers can be repositioned to the right, left, or top of the unit. The supply collar is 8 inches and the return is 10 inches.
UV LIGHT TECHNOLOGY
This may be an optional feature, but adding UV light technology to the cooling unit enhances overall indoor air quality and unit performance. The UV light option protects the unit against mold and other bacteria from developing. Here are some of the benefits of UV light technology:
- Prevents the growth of mold inside the system.
- Eliminates pathogen and lowers allergen levels in the wine cellar.
- Eliminates odors and unpleasant smells that are associated with mold and bacterial growth.
- Maintains a cleaner and healthier cooling system, keeping the unit operating at optimal efficiency.
What Is Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation?
Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI) uses short-wavelength ultraviolet (UV-C) light that kills microorganisms like fungus, mold, mildew, and bacteria. Since the 1950s, the UVGI disinfection method has been widely used in several applications, including food, water, and air purification.
UVGI has been reintroduced into heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) in recent years and is used for disinfecting ductwork, sterilizing surfaces, reducing microorganisms in air and food products.
How Does UV Lighting Work With The Cooling Units?
Air handling units are more prone to microorganisms such as bacteria, mold, and fungus as they can easily be drawn in from the cellar. The inside of the unit is a perfect place for these microorganisms to grow because of the moisture that has accumulated in the compartment. Once they get inside the unit, they begin to develop and push back into the cellar.
The UV lighting system is an add-on feature designed to target the accumulation of these microorganisms. The bulb is placed within the evaporator compartment so that the coil and drip tray are directly exposed to the UV light, ensuring these components remain unclogged and operate at peak efficiency, improving total system performance. Depending on the blower direction, the UV bulb can be attached to any access panel on the evaporator side of the cooling unit. The wine bottles will be safe and will never be in contact with the UV light with this setup.
The first line of cooling units that include a UV light option are the Phantom and the Slimline series.
